The collection is composed principally of correspondence relating to his publications, especially to the Popham Celebration speech (criticism and praise as well as letters acknowledging receipt of copies of the printed version of his remarks). There are also two groups of acknowledgments from recipients of his pamphlet _The First Records of Anglo-American Colonization: Their History_, as well as family correspondence, genealogical material, invoices, a few newspaper clippings and historical notes.

John Wingate Thornton (1818-1878), a Boston lawyer, historian and antiquary, was a founder of the New England Historic Genealogical Society and was elected to membership in the American Antiquarian Society in 1855.
